River Lodge – Level III Child and Youth Care Counsellor

The Program:

River Lodge is a therapeutic campus-based care program that provides intensive treatment to youth aged 12 to 17 with dual diagnoses. These youth have developmental delays and social and emotional deficits along with mental health issues. We provide safety and stability in a highly structured setting to help them attain success and reintegrate them back into the community. We strive to improve their self-regulation skills, social skills and adaptive functioning. Treatment practices follow a behavioural-family systems orientation where social learning methods are used to promote behaviour change. The program also has a strong focus on preserving family and cultural connections by providing support through family work and after care services.

The Position:

The program has an opening for a full time Child and Youth Care Counsellor position. The schedule for this position requires flexibility to work weekday/weekend morning and/or evening shifts (shifts are generally 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.).

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Child and Youth Care Counsellor is a member of an interdisciplinary team which assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the treatment program(s) for youth. The Counsellor participates fully in all facets of program life and is responsible for our youths’ daily care, treatment, nurturance, supervision, health and discipline. The role is extensive and includes counselling, teaching and training, as well as recording and reporting.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide leadership, training and supervision to staff as required.
• Complete supervisory and administrative duties in the absence of the Program Coordinator; this could include making decisions regarding program changes and individual cases.
• Apply sound and independent judgment to situations and daily activities within the framework of the administrative and program guidelines of the program and Agency.
• Be a liaison between front line and senior staff and ensure effective communication.
• Assist with counsellor evaluations, personal development plans and weekly CSOP evaluations.
• Provide on-the-job training to Level I staff and general supervision and advice to Level II staff; help support and supervise practicum students.
• Coordinate and monitor systems and overall activities on shift.
• At times Level III counselors may be required to cover on-call duties.

Qualifications and Skills:

• A degree or diploma in Human Services or a related field.
• Qualified at the III level status; certification with the Child and Youth Care Association of Alberta or registered as a Social Worker.
• High professional and ethical standards, in accordance with ethical codes adopted by your profession, and endorsed by the Agency.
• A thorough understanding of the Agency’s philosophy and goals.
• At least four years of relevant experience with youth, campus-based care, and/or family and community service programs.
• High competence in and managing crisis situations using a supportive, calm and solution focused approach.
• Strong knowledge of and ability to apply trauma informed care practices.
• Ability to develop positive, professional relationships with team and community partners.
• A solid understanding of Agency and community resources and an ability to integrate updated information into the program’s framework and services.
• Experience in program development and agency leadership.
• Demonstrated experience supervising, training, engaging, and developing employees.
• Excellent communication, organizational and administrative skills.
• Cross cultural competence.
• Self-awareness and ability to take initiative.
• Availability and preparedness to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the program.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Preference may be given to candidates with extensive program curriculum knowledge and experience with staff training and coaching..
