Fostering the Future – A Foster Parent’s Journey

What’s it like to become a foster parent? What is this journey that one is embarking upon? What inspires them to become a foster parent?

How does being a foster parent transform not only the lives of young people, but the lives of the families opening their hearts and doors to them?

What challenges are faced? What support systems are in place for everyone involved?

Foster parents are often the unsung heroes in our communities, helping young people build resilience, develop confidence, and achieve personal growth.

At a time when our society is grappling with mental health challenges and increasingly recognizing the lasting impact of childhood trauma, Hull Services’ Fostering Connections program supports children youth in care aged 17 and under until they can be reunited with their family, connected with kin, or placed in a permanent home.

The program focuses on providing care in safe, licensed foster homes where meaningful relationships are nurtured, healthy development is supported, and connections to community are strengthened.

We are grateful to share a testimonial from foster parent, Emma, who reflects on how fostering has impacted and transformed the lives of her family:

“When we decided to become foster parents, I knew it would change our lives. I just didn’t realize how much.

Fostering has been one of the most rewarding things we’ve ever done as a family. It hasn’t just made a difference in the lives of the children who’ve come into our home—it has changed us too.

Watching my own children grow through this journey has been incredible. They’ve learned what empathy really looks like. They’ve learned that every child has a different story, and that family isn’t just about who you’re related to. It’s about showing love, kindness, patience, and making someone feel like they belong. Those are lessons I don’t think they could have learned in the same way anywhere else.

This journey has changed me, too. I’ve become more patient, understanding, and grateful. It’s helped me see the world through a different lens and reminded me that even small acts of kindness can have a huge impact on a child who’s been through so much.

It would be impossible to do this without support, and Hull’s Fostering Connections has been there for us every step of the way. Whether we’ve needed advice, encouragement, or someone to help us through a difficult situation, we’ve always known we weren’t doing it alone. That support has meant so much to our family.

I’m not going to pretend fostering is always easy. There are hard days. There are days when you’re tired, when things don’t go as planned, or when saying goodbye is heartbreaking.

But for us, those hard days have never outweighed the good ones. The smiles,  laughter, the little milestones, and knowing you’ve helped a child feel safe and loved make it all worth it.

If someone asked me if I’d do it all again, my answer would be yes, without hesitation.

Fostering has made our family stronger, changed us for the better, and given us memories we’ll carry with us forever.

I hope every child who has come through our home leaves knowing that they were loved, that they mattered, and that they will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

When Emma and her family decided to become foster parents, they knew they would be making a difference in a child’s life. What they didn’t expect was how profoundly the experience would change their own.

Through Hull Services’ Fostering Connections program, foster parents provide safe, nurturing homes for children and youth in care while they are reunited with family, connected with kin, or placed in a permanent home. Along the way, many foster families discover that fostering transforms their lives as much as the lives of the children they welcome.

Emma reflects on the lessons, challenges, and rewards that have shaped her family’s fostering journey.

Fostering Changed Our Family

“When we decided to become foster parents, I knew it would change our lives. I just didn’t realize how much.

The Lessons We Couldn’t Learn Anywhere Else

“They’ve learned what empathy really looks like. They’ve learned that every child has a different story, and that family isn’t just about who you’re related to. It’s about showing love, kindness, patience, and making someone feel like they belong. Those are lessons I don’t think they could have learned in the same way anywhere else.

We Never Did It Alone

“It would be impossible to do this without support, and Hull’s Fostering Connections has been there for us every step of the way. Whether we’ve needed advice, encouragement, or someone to help us through a difficult situation, we’ve always known we weren’t doing it alone. That support has meant so much to our family.”

The Hard Days and the Good Days

“I’m not going to pretend fostering is always easy. There are hard days. There are days when you’re tired, when things don’t go as planned, or when saying goodbye is heartbreaking.

But for us, those hard days have never outweighed the good ones. The smiles,  laughter, the little milestones, and knowing you’ve helped a child feel safe and loved make it all worth it.”

If I Had the Chance to Do It Again

“If someone asked me if I’d do it all again, my answer would be yes, without hesitation.

Fostering has made our family stronger, changed us for the better, and given us memories we’ll carry with us forever.

I hope every child who has come through our home leaves knowing that they were loved, that they mattered, and that they will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

Could fostering be part of your story?

Emma’s experience is just one example of the difference foster families make every day. By opening their homes, foster parents provide stability, connection, and a sense of belonging to children and youth who need it most.

If you’ve ever wondered whether fostering might be right for you, we encourage you to learn more. You may be able to make a life-changing difference for a child while discovering, as Emma did, how profoundly the experience can enrich your own family.
