More Than A Celebration: The Journeys Behind Hull School’s Milestone Year

This year marks a meaningful milestone for Hull School, with one of the largest Grade 12 farewell celebrations in recent history. Behind that number is something far more important: a group of young people who have demonstrated resilience, growth, and determination.

“This year’s grade 12 class was one of the largest in recent history,” says Derek Bohn, Director of Educational Services. “Each student has demonstrated remarkable resilience, perseverance, and growth throughout their educational journey.”

Hull School plays a unique role in helping students reach this moment. Designed for young people whose social, emotional, behavioural, or mental health needs have created barriers in traditional classrooms, the school offers a different kind of learning environment—one rooted in relationships, individualized support, and trauma-informed care.

“Through strong relationships, individualized programming, and a trauma-informed approach, we help students develop the academic, social, vocational, and life skills needed to be successful in school and the community,” Bohn explains.

For many students, the farewell celebration represents far more than completing coursework. It reflects years of persistence and the courage to keep moving forward, even when their paths have been disrupted. “It is a reminder that their past does not define their future,” says Bohn, “and that they are capable of achieving meaningful goals and pursuing new opportunities.”

That journey often unfolds over time. Bohn recalls one student who arrived at Hull School carrying “a great deal of frustration and uncertainty about their future.” It wasn’t a single turning point that changed their path, but rather “a series of relationships, opportunities, and small successes” that helped them begin to see themselves differently. Through hands-on vocational experiences and the steady encouragement of staff, the student built confidence, discovered new interests, and ultimately graduated. “When students are given the opportunity to build on their strengths, remarkable things can happen,” Bohn adds.

What sets Hull School apart is this integrated approach—combining education with therapeutic supports and experiential learning opportunities. The size of this year’s class reflects both the strength of the program and the commitment of staff.

“It demonstrates the impact of a relationship-based, trauma-informed approach that helps students stay engaged, overcome barriers, and remain connected to their educational goals,” says Bohn.

Ultimately, this class is a powerful reminder of what’s possible. “When young people are provided with consistent support, meaningful relationships, and opportunities to build on their strengths, they can achieve so much more.”
